Linux server
« on: November 13, 2010, 04:15:57 PM »
I had some questions because I want to set one up. I have a Linux box, with ubuntu distro. I have Mysql, Apache, phpmyadmin so far.

I can type
Code: [Select]
http://localhost/phpmyadmin/ and it will come up with the Phpmyadmin stuff.

However, I want something like: cPanel/WHM (Accellerated 2) Is this free?

How can I make it so this server can be accessed from other places. Not just localhost?

Im kinda looking for how to set up a server basicly.

Edit: Added "Webmin" and forwarded my ports. So possibly it can be accessed from other places. Not really sure. Next step?

cPanel/WHM is NOT free and very costly. I know there are some open source panels out there, but I tried them and they sucked. That was years ago before I gave up and created my own.

As a general disclaimer - there is probably some stipulation in your ISP TOS that says you can't run servers unless you have a business account, but YMMV and I am not the ISP police.

If you want it accessible then you need to forward ports in the router ( or put your machine as a DMZ host which is generally a bad idea but I am not going to physically stop you ). I hope you at least researched what ports you need to open - that would be my advice before you start willy nilly opening up ports to the internet.

I personally tried webmin and didn't like the free version. Though, I suppose it is good if you need a web interface and easy granularity of permissions but SSH seems to be way easier to use to manage servers imo.

It looks like you opened ports, have you tried to give people your public IP?
