Hey
« on: December 17, 2010, 03:33:03 pm »
Hello you guys can call me vic or moist gorilla, whichever one you like better is fine :)

I have tried getting into programming 3 times. The first 2 times (dont laugh at me :( ) I was stuck on the first hello world program and couldnt get past because I always got an error no matter how much I modified the code. Im not dumb, I take high level (for a highschool student) calculus and physics if it proves anything. I recently though I would try again and thought third times the charm. No luck, but im not going to give up again and I want to make some new programming friends.

You can add a few of us here to your MSN and we can walk you through it Vic. If that is still not enough, many of us have gone as far as using Teamviewing and showing the person on their own computer how to do something. I think I've TV about 15 people since the start of December. Anyhow, welcome to the forums. We have up and down times but we are normally pretty fast at answering questions or helping people out. Check out the site and look around. I am sure there is something for everyone here, even if it is just the humor section.

Welcome to the forums Vic.

C++ with visual c++ 2010 express, I hear its the most useful because its pretty much the industry standard. Im sure that I will gain the logic skills if I work at it enough. It kind of stinks that I can't even get past the most basic program and when I show it to you guys it will probably be the most simple mistake. Im going to try to recreate everything now and post the error I get.

2 hours later... Quite a long time to reproduce any error at all with a hello world program. O_o

Also, in response to Pederson. I don't think that logically. My professor calls me a intuitive programmer. Some sort of "rare breed" was the term he used.I honestly think programming works well for people who can make connections between what works, what might work, and what does not work. After that, it is just a matter of gaining experience and let the connections grow. After a while, you just "know" how to do something new or at least have a idea of how to.

I'm sorry, I just wanted to see if I could figure it out myself and I just did. I was using a book from 2008 which I thought might have been out of date so I got a new one from 2010. Turns out this book had a huge intro that explains the difference between native c++ and CLR c++ and what .NET is and a bunch of other stuff that mostly went over my head but the reason I took so long was because I was trying to understand it. Also I got it to work so everything is fine :), turns out the book I was using was out of date.

2008 is not that old. I have a C++ primer book from 1996 on C++ and the examples work fine. I'm glad to see you figured it out though. Guess you're on your way now to becoming a programmer. Good luck. We can help you out where you need it!
