Character Builder
« on: October 04, 2009, 01:52:13 pm »
Hey would it be possible to make a program to roughly do the same thing as this?
http://www.wizards.com/dnd/Tool.aspx?x=dnd/4new/tool/characterbuilder

I know it would take a while, and seeing how my forum game is going to be changed alot the last version of it wont happen for a while.
It would be the classes and races from my forum game.
If it is possible to do let me know, um will post this URL to this site on my forum incase anyone wants to learn how to program or anything to help get the game going better.

5 Health = 1 Stamina, 1 Level
5 Mana = 1 Stamina, 1 Level
1 Attack = 5 Strenght
1 Defence = 10 Agility
1 Magic-Atk = 5 Intelligence
1 Magic-Def = 10 Intelligence
1 Dodge = 20 Agility

thats how those stats are setup

It is possible, VB.Net or VB6 would probably be your best bet.

I'm thinking the game is just "click here to set attributes of your character?" right?
If so, Visual Basic 6 or Visual Basic .Net (which is free) would be the easiest to program something like this.

Wait, I guess I am not understanding the bigger picture. Can you go into more detail - like do you want to clone the functionality into a web based system?

Ok well basicly we have a Dungeons and Dragon type game in the makeing on our forum.
so basicly what im looking for is a program like the DnD Character Builder.

So basicly a program that lets you see what your character stats would be at lvl 1 before makeing your character.
Person should be able to
Pick between 1-14 Races and Classes or more if we make more.
Based on what the person selects for race and Class the stats of the character should be effected as well as the place 5 extra stat points.
Going to be makeing like 5 skills for each race and the person should be able to select one of the skills.

more understandable now?

Yeah, so the game you are making now in your forum is web based right? And then you want the character builder to also be web based.
If so you will need:
+ PHP
+ HTML
+ MySQL
Optionally, BUT STRONGLY RECOMMENDED (increases the flavor):
+ AJAX
+ Javascript

Mix well, shake don't stir and you could have a small workable framework in no time (ie someone just has to plug in data and you should be good to go).

If you give me some specific case examples, such as giving an example of 2 race/classes combination and what stats would be affected differently I could come up with starting foundation for you.

Oh, if its just that, wouldent you simply multiple the level by each of those stats? Seems like a 2 minute time programable app.

Yup, a 5 minute project in console using C++, and maybe a 40 min project using graphics. My game engine could make it work in under 20 minutes since the frame work is there already. I'll think about taking this up when I get home.

um okay then
seeing how the game isnt done though it may take a bit to get everything for the program done.
Hopeing after the game is fully done being created (without any add-ons) to make it a program or ask one of you to see if you can make a program so it can just be played and that over the internet instead of a forum.

Uhm, I'm building the base, it won't display anything until you put in the data. In fact, this could be done in batch as well most likely.

Okay, first off, what language do you want this in?
If you don't mind it being a Executable, I can build it now. It wont work over the internet, you will have to download it to use it, but it will work the same.
If you want it in a internet language such as JS, Java, or ActionScript, then you will need Nathan to make it.
So decide that first.

It's nearly done. I had to stop and work on my college work for a few weeks. COBOL class requires us to have our program written down twice, one copy for us, the other for her. Each program takes about 5 hours to write down completely once, and its written on blocked paper with 80 characters per line. On top of that we have to line up all the data, check off the data test, write a file description sheet, explain each of our individual custom variables in detail, get a copy of a .lst version of the script along with a clean compile. I was 2 projects behind. I'm 90% caught up now though. I should have it up within the week.
